Video production is on the rise as more people are taking to video to express their creativity and deliver messages. Be it professional film crews, indie filmmakers or youngsters starting up YouTube channels, a video production shoot is something numerous people have or will partake in.
So how exactly do you get a perfect shoot? Well, most of the times, you can’t. There’s just something about shoots and things going bad that wed like a happily married couple. What we can do though, is to prepare and equip ourselves well to minimize any chaos. Here’s a list of things to take note of for a smooth video production shoot.
Shoots last from about 4 to 12 or more hours a day (Read this Quora article to learn more). Your attire is vital. You won’t be able to work at your fullest potential when you’re hammered by attire flaws. Imagine wearing layers under the hot sun or wearing a light tee when it’s chilly outside. Always check with the call sheet to find out whether you’ll be shooting in the interior or exterior and dress appropriately. Some call sheets will even have the weather forecast for the next day. Take note! Dress well, shoot well.
Everything. Equipment, location, crew, call times, sponsors, the weather etcetera. Everything you’ve prepared for the shoot, you double check it. You don’t want to be travelling far for a shoot only to realize you left A, B and C at home or actors/crew members aren’t on time due to tardiness or mix-ups with call times. Double-check!
Things are bound to go wrong, yes. But you’re here to get a shoot done. Focus on that goal and come up with a solution. No one likes that guy who panics and starts complaining or crying about the situation. Panicking and complaining are like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do but it doesn’t get you anywhere. Keep calm, deal with the situation and go shoot.
Planning and executing a video production shoot is tough. But every shoot is also a learning experience. At the end of the day, you’re aiming for that final product. Equip yourselves with these tips and ride the waves to the shore. Read more about ROCKSTAGVID’s production processes.
